DOT and Non-DOT Alcohol Testing
Breath alcohol testing may be requested for DOT or non-DOT workplace programs. Bring the employer authorization or electronic registration so the collector can confirm the testing authority, reason for the test and reporting instructions. DOT testing must follow federal procedures; non-DOT testing follows the employer’s written policy.
Transportation employers can review our DOT drug and alcohol testing services. Employers managing a broader program can also review our workplace testing support.
Screening and Confirmation
A breath alcohol screening result determines whether a confirmation test is required. When confirmation is required, the collector follows the applicable waiting period and testing procedure before completing the second test. During that interval, the employee should follow the collector’s instructions, including restrictions on eating, drinking, smoking or placing anything in the mouth.
Information Employers Should Provide
- Whether the test is DOT or non-DOT and, for DOT testing, the applicable transportation agency.
- The reason for the test, such as pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty or follow-up.
- The employee’s name and the employer or representative contact information.
- Authorization, electronic registration and result-reporting instructions.
- For mobile service, the workplace address, participant count and requested collection time.
What to Bring
- Government-issued photo ID.
- Employer authorization, agency instructions or other testing paperwork.
- Appointment details and the requesting organization’s contact information.
